Gig News: Aloe Blacc joined by Yasmin and Dionne Broomfield for Somerset House Summer Series concert

Summer Series at Somerset House usually sells out in a heartbeat, only for tickets to appear a few hours later on those criminal websites at largely inflated prices.  Twenty-Eleven’s session was no exception.

Every year though, there are one or two gigs that aren’t as popular as the others.  A misjudgement on their part… I don’t think so because one of the few not to have sold out is probably the most exciting of the line-ups.  I Need a Dollar Aloe Blacc headlines.  However, support from Yasmin and Dionne Broomfield make the concert extremely tasty.

Seeing diverse American talent alongside the cream of the next generation from the UK should make for a beautiful contrast in styles.

The opulent setting of Somerset House should make for a breathtaking evening of soul, retro influenced and modern.  US Swagger and British Grit.

The concert takes places on Sunday 10th July, and tickets are available for £22.75 (+fees) from Ticketmaster (link here).

Should be a very good show indeed… now can I make back from the British Grand Prix in time to go???

Gig preview: Aloe Blacc at Pure Groove, June 1st

Update: This no longer appears on the Pure Groove website so looks like its been cancelled… real shame

This is ridiculously huge!  Put this in your diary right now and book the afternoon of work if necessary (especially if you are liable to be working late!).  Aloe Blacc is playing Pure Groove in Farringdon for f***ing free!

Aloe Blacc is an artists I would happily pay £20 to see live (and am a little annoyed I could not catch him at the Jazz Café last year!).  So to see him playing in Pure Groove for free is utterly ridiclous.  Recently signed to Stonesthrow Records (Mayer Hawthorne’s label) and on the back of potentially the best song of the year so far, I Need A Dollar, even if he shows up late and plays one song it’ll be worth the money… because its FREE!!!!!

How he uses the small intimate space to show of his Hip-Hop Neo-Soul will be very interesting indeed!

Song of the Week: I Need a Dollar

Aloe Blacc – I Need A Dollar

Twenty-Ten is looking  like a good year on the Neo-Soul front.  Sade has graced us with a comeback, both Vivian Green, and Musiq due new albums before the year is out too.

However, I know it’s only April, however Aloe Blacc has potentially laid the trump card and set the benchmark for everyone to aspire to.  This song is nuts!  It has a classic soul sound with nu-school sentiments; the brass on chorus is beautiful and the breakdown at the end adds a whole new flavour to the record.  The content is also on point being particularly pertinent for the times we live in at the moment.

Play is song once… play it again… tell someone about it… then play it some more.

Awesome… now why can’t I hear records like this when I turn the radio on in the morning?
