Gig Review and Pictures: Magnetic Man at the iTunes Festival, London – 26/07/2011

Dubstep has come a long way in a short space of time. From being seen as Grime’s bullied little brother, it has gone down the gym, drunk gallons of Maximuscle and now looks down and laughs as Grime cowers in the corner.  This night epitomised that, the maturing of the sound that now represents youth rave culture.

Live Dubstep however does have to potential to be tedious and unimaginative; DJ’s simply pressing play on pre-mixed songs and throwing in a few samples for good measure.  It can lack the the raw, impassioned spontaneity of the best bands.  As the four laptops were rolled out, black tape suspiciously where the Apple logo should have been (it was their festival) my heart sunk a little… no drums, no guitars, the stage looked empty.  Just four laptops on a table.  What could they really do?

What they did was announce, define and confirm how exciting four laptops can be.  Whereas bands give you beautiful confusion, Magnetic Man provided heroic perfection.  The concentration across all three was intense.  It seemed each soundwave was being studied.  Any time something went slightly out, a knob was turned, a button pressed and the sound perfected once again.  Add on top the special effects, the tweaks and the bravado, Magnetic Man crowd created something quite special and enthralling.  Earlier today Skream tweeted the Roundhouse was “sounding MASSIVE!” and he was not lying.  The basslines vibrated your spine and shook your entire body.

With this epic sound being clinically perfected the crowd were worked up into a frenzy, like the Roundhouse had turned in to a Roman Amphitheatre.  The mob was craving blood, so, Skream, Benga, and Artwork, played their part; teasing with mellow instrumentals, sadistically punishing with hard hitting basslines then rewarding good behaviour with vocal anthems.

It was easy to identify the highlights of this show, it was the perfectly paced vocal bangers.  Each bringing its own treat, Ms Dynamite hitting the stage to rap Fire, Alex Clare flawlessly impersonating John Legend on Getting Nowhere, P Money instigating mayhem over Slang Like This and Anthemic.  The former induced a wild mosh pit more akin to an Arctic Monkeys festival performance than to a free gig in Camden.  Katy B’s appearance was a real crowd pleaser – Perfect Stranger creating just as much a karaoke session tonight as at her show last week.  Magnetic Man were flying.

Whilst the sound they created was immense, it would have been nice to see some live instrumentation.  Maverick Sabre really raised the bar with his live Dubstep and I think it would have added a whole new dimension of excitement to the show, and raised the bar yet again.  Then again, it would have also been great to see La Roux ride in on a white horse to sing In For The Kill before donning a JetPack and rocketing through the roof… but you can’t have it all (Boiling Water would have been a nice addition to the set too).

Magnetic Man proved to be superheroes tonight.  The set was sonically clinical and wildly energetic.  Great show, and it is definitely worth catching Magnetic Man live if you have the chance.  It offers far more than you’d expect from four laptops on a table (with a bottle of Petron for good measure!).

Gig News: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings come to the Roundhouse

Been a little off the pace recently, however this one (which is a long long long long long way away) is well worth a note in the diary.  Sharon Jones and her Dap Kings are returning to London on November 3rd, to play Camden’s Roundhouse. After their stonking show early this year at Koko, this one is a definite for any diary.

Tickets are £22.50 plus change which is well worth it if the show is as good as the last one.

Don’t fear rest of the UK, they’re also playing Manchester (4th November @ The Ritz) and Edinburgh (5th November @ The Queens Hall – why is it all the Northern venues sound so much more regal and dramatic than the London ones; “The Roundhouse”… could at least call it the Royal Roundhouse or summat!).

Fascination Banner

For those that don’t know, Fascination Records = POP!  That pure pop, that glamorous pop, that sometimes very painful pop which gets stuck in your head and you sing along to in the shower!  On Monday night, Fascination took over the iTunes festival for a celebration of girl powered pop music with a line-up that was not be scoffed at.  A night of musical heaven and hell was sure to follow… let’s find out

Sophie Ellis-Bexter

Experience.  It’s a very important thing.  It cannot be learned or bought, it’s acquired over time.  Experience counts for a lot and Ms. Ellis-Bexter has experience.  Two studio albums, countless singles and a career spanning over half a decade, her experience was clearly on display.  She played some of her famous songs (Groovejet, Murder on the Dancefloor) and a few of the newbies whilst strutting with permanent pout (Loving the lipstick) and in mile-high diamante (well I hope they were diamante and not diamond encrusted… recession darling!) heels.  How she managed to jump up and down in those things I will never know!  Her porcelain doll looks coupled with her steam muffled vocals made for a performance that melted you away.

So to the next… Girls Can’t Catch

Then we moved onto the new kids on the block, Girls Can’t Catch.  These three chicks definitely look the real deal; part pop-princesses and part punk-queens.  However having the look isn’t always enough.  Yes, they strutted the right stuff.  Yes, they hit the right notes and synchronised their angst on cue.  However they never seemed really comfortable.  Playing without a band certainly did not help because it left the girls exposed.  There was no great drummer or lead guitarists to cover over the kinks.

Coming after Sophie’s assured, and simmering display this felt a little vacant, missing some energy.  That said, I did see great potential in these three wee lasses.  They sung an awesome acoustic track (the name I forget) which was majestic.  These three have the look, the attitude sold.  With  just a little work on the sound and a few more shows to become comfortable then really good things to come… definately a work in progress.

Then… the main event… The Saturdays

This five piece were everything I expected them to be… and three things I didn’t.  The result… a surprisingly enjoyable set.

The things I expected; camped up glamour, strong vocals and a well polished layer of gleam.  CHECK.    What I didn’t expect was the amount of originality.  A thinned down version of my favourite song (yes, I have a favourite Saturdays song… WHAT???), Chasing Lights was a real treat and their cover of Pink’s So What had the crowd rocking.

I didn’t expect the seemingly laissez-faire approach to choreography at times.  This is by no means a criticism; it’s actually a massive compliment because it made the Saturdays seem less ‘fake’ and a little more ‘real’.  The final thing I did not expect was how infectious some of their records are when performed live.  Never in a million years did I expect to be singing along to Up (shoot I was even jumping).

On Monday night, The Saturdays provided some strong evidence to suggest that when done right, pop music can work.  Also that it can transcend its cheesy, camp and manufactured stereotypes and be very entertaining.

Gig Review and Pictures: Beverley Knight @ iTunes Festival – 25.07.09

Beverley Knight border

Wow!  A quick word on Beverley Knight last night… amazing.  If I am completely honest, I have never been the biggest Beverley Knight fan.  Yes I loved the old skool tracks; Flava of the Old School, Mutual Feeling, Moving On Up, and I fully respected her as a pioneering artists for the UK Soul scene. Her more recent music has been nice, however in my opinion nothing to get over excited about… just consistently good.

Went to yesterday’s gig just expecting a nice night out and a few sing-a-long moments.  What I got was totally unexpected… a powerful, emotional, and energetic performance.  Beverley Knight has a career that spans over two decades and five studio albums, and this experience was clearly on show at the Roundhouse.  She drove through all her greatest hits in an outstanding manner with many spine-tingling moments… damn, she nearly moved me to tears at one point.  A totally unexpected pleasure and she has definately raised the bar!

If you get the opportunity to see Beverley Knight, do not think twice about buying tickets!  Before last night I would never have gone out of my way to see her… now I cannot wait til her next show (and feel a bit stupid for fronting on her for so long) because after missing two decades of shows, I got a lot of catching up to do.  Outstanding!

Gig Review and Pictures: Marina and the Diamonds @ iTunes Festival ’09

MArina banner

I’ve been a quiet fan of the self-proclaimed ‘child prodigy’ that is Marina for a little while now.  So to catch her at the iTunes Festival was a real treat.  After taking off her shoes before even singing the first song she pranced around like a hamster on speed, twirling, spinning and stomping across the stage.  Singing songs from both the EPs, it was clear to see why she is getting all the attention that she is. Great set, definately hope we hear a lot more from her in the future.
