Waxin’ Lyrical on… Stricken City

Another post from the vault I’ve been meaning to put up for sometime Stricken City, an indie band I discovered around last autumn after hearing Tak-O-Tak and going nuts.  It’s edgy guitar led indie with Rebekah Raa (gotta love that name) providing a jerky vocal over the top.  Can I understand a word she says? Maybe one or two, however it does matter because it all seems to work and create a frenzied moment of indie-pop.

I caught them live way back in January at Dingwalls and the show was tight.  They managed to bring Bardou alive, giving it a fire the recorded version seems to lack.  The set was diverse, from the dark Losing Colour in which the lead guitars screeched and wailed so much the floor shook to the pacy dance-a-long sounds of Animal Festival and Small Things.

The other thing this band have going for them is they care about presentation.  Their EP Songs About People I Know is an absolutely gorgeous package; from the oversized box to the song lyrics printed on tracing paper and bonus DVD, it is a record worthy of any collection.  Even if you hate the music you can just stare at it lovingly; it reminds me why I still buy CDs.  Oh, the music is very good too, the stand-outs being PS and Five Meters Apart.

My fingers are crossed for Stricken City and I hope they have a fantastic 2010 and beyond because I do like this band.
