It’s been six years since Conya Doss was last in the UK. In that time she has suffered much personal strife (serious illness and the loss of loved ones) she confessed to a sold out Jazz Cafe last night. She has also enjoyed the sheer joy of becoming a mother too. All this and she even managed to put out a few albums too!
Conya’s show was dominated by her glowing personality; obviously in love with her music it showed in inclusive performance. It was a fun and youthful mix of mid tempo nu-soul. Like a Sunday afternoon jog through the New Forest; it never raced away, soulfully soothing without being boring.
And boring it never was, indeed, Conya’s attempts to add a little spice became the highlights of the show. Her two little competitions asking members of the audience to sing her songs to win a CD were unexpected treasures. Two rather shy ladies climbed on stage, only to blow away the watching audience with note perfect renditions that left the ever gracious Conya reeling with joy.
Indeed, couple this with some outstanding solos from her backing singers, you could argue the gig’s most memorable moments were provided by the supporting cast.
A thoroughly enjoyable soul gig, fronted by a charming and loveable singer. Let’s hope it does not take 6 years for her return.

Nicely put. I too like so many people that night had a relaxing and pleasurable time listening to Conya. I’m new to her music and I was pleasantly surprise at her performance and the way she got the audience involved. I will definitely be buying her records in the future and I would like to thank my boyfriend for his recommendations as he is also big fan.
