Songs of the Week: Kano, Yasmin, Nina Nesbitt, Amy Winehouse

Kano + Mickey J feat. Ghetts – House of Pain

Simply Epic.  That is the only way to describe this song.  Epic in tone.  Epic is lyrical content.  A defining moment in UK Hip-Hop.

Yasmin feat. Shy FX & Ms. Dynamite – Light Up The World

I always have time for some revivalist old school jungle.  With Yasmin’s sweet vocals over Shy FX’s dancehall tinged drum ‘n’ bass beat this could be what Yasmin needs to take her in to the Top 10.  Fingers crossed the DJs get behind a cracking feel good tune.

Nina Nesbitt – Babylon

Looks like a full UK connection this week.  One listen to Babylon and you can see why she has been championed by Ed Sheeran.  A heart-breaking, sparse song that cries out with yearning.  Fantastic.

Amy Winehouse – Girl from Ipanema

To complete this weeks British connection is, in my opinion, the choice cut from Amy’s Lioness album is this cover of Astrud Gilberto’s Girl From Ipanema.  It has the trademark sound of the second album and is a joy.  Amy is a real talent that will be sorely missed.
