M&O – RUN!
Every now and then I do a bandcamp binge and buy loads of albums. Unfortunately, I don’t always get a chance to full absorb all the albums I buy at the time. M&O’s Almost Us is one such album. Boy am I happy I decided to give it a proper spin last night on the Central Line home because I found this gem of a record.
RUN! is a calm and patient song about that moment when a relationship ends. The child-like xylophones and warm singing betray somewhat sinister lyrics. This contrast makes for a special record which works on so many levels. It sounds like a love song, however the words suggest something far more dark.
M&O have been added to the must see in concert list because I need to hear this record played live. Really excited to hear what they do with. Bravo!
Gemma Hayes – Making My Way
Gemma Hayes’ latest album Bones + Longing was the highlight of my binge shop in Rough Trade earlier this week. A great slice of wholesome folk indie music; soothing vocals, mellow-muted guitars it is a joy to listen to (and kept me sane while stuck in killer South West London traffic). Making My Way is my favourite cut on the album. I love the detail in the production, it captures your ears and refuses to release them. Gemma’s voice soothes you in to a story about returning to a past lover.
Buying Bones + Longing was my first encounter with Gemma Hayes’ music. A quick search on iTunes revealed over 10 years of music! Where has she been my whole life? I have a lot of catching-up to do and thoroughly looking forward to it. Got a feeling her back-catalogue will turn out to be a very very good investment indeed.
Victoria Monét – We Are People
“Hello, hello, you know that we are people / we are more than all the feelings you read through”, Victoria Monét informs us on this part dance, part R&B feel good record. It is a warm, affectionate song which takes us on a ride through different sounds and paces to create vivid picture of young yearning.
Honne – The Night
Starting low-fi then slowing building in to so much more it may be reflective of the night Honne are seducing a future lover in to enjoying. It is a captivating listen and after listening to this a few times I think I want to spend the night with them; these are some smooth fellas! A great record with sometimes cheesy lyrics to make the experience even more authentic.
